The BBC found a 2010 blog post that offers instructions for removing the software, but what’s most telling are the comments underneath it, in which users express gratitude for helping them get rid of “that stupid white cat.” Apparently, back in the day, many Skype users found themselves in the same position as attorney Ponton.
The Reallusion spokesperson said the software had to be selected at setup on Dell computers, and selected during the installation the Creative hardware. Several websites that explain how to get rid of what are known as Potentially Unwanted Programs, or PUPs, include instructions for removing both Live! Cam Avatar and Crazy Talk. What is clear, though, is that the software has been frustrating webcam owners for some time. It’s not clear when the programs changed ownership. Multiple requests for comment to Reallusion and Creative were not returned. It’s in line with other Reallusion software, which is targeted at skilled consumer and professional animators. The newer release allows you to create and edit 2D and 3D avatars that are far more sophisticated than the 2010 version. Reallusion still offers Crazy Talk, which is now up to version 8, but it no longer contains the white kitten avatar.
